Hamburg Borough tax collector Casey Moyer has resigned from her position, and has been replaced with a temporary collector until a new election can confirm one officially.
The replacement collector is Laurel Williams, who started the job on July 1; she is the wife of borough councilman Doug Williams.
Moyer tendered her resignation on June 18, due to a job opening at the Hamburg Area School District—“one that came up rather unexpectedly,” said borough council vice president Jeanette Heckman. With collection time coming up, this left the borough with only a week to find a replacement.
“We contacted people who had run for the elected position before,” said Heckman, “and they weren’t interested—so we just kept calling around, thinking of people who would be qualified.”
“There were two councilmen whose wives had expressed an interest…and she was the one we ended up with,” said borough manager Lynda Albright,
Laurel Williams is a school bus driver for the Hamburg Area School District. Previously, she worked for the then Wachovia, leaving in April 2011. She was also a notary for NationWide Insurance in Hamburg.
An official election for tax collector will be held, with primary, in November of 2013. Williams will be paid for her services.
