Sometimes choosing where to go for a night out is a debatable issue, yet Bistro on 10 in Honey Brook has undertaken a new initiative which makes choosing a destination on Wednesday nights a much simpler choice.
Just this past week, the restaurant launched ‘Bartending for a Cause’, a weekly fundraising effort where a portion of patrons’ dollars will support those in need.
“Each Wednesday from 6 – 9 p.m. Bistro on 10 is donating 10 percent of all food and beverage earnings, as well as anything over 18% gratuity, to charity,” said Bistro on 10’s Director of Community Relations Lori Eberly.
Eberly, who herself makes a habit of being generous through donations, came up with the idea for having the Bartenders for a Cause fundraisers. Yet since she had never before organized a fundraiser she sought the assistance of fellow bistro employee Janet Heinis, who has a background in fundraising which includes her service with the Honey Brook Community Partnership and Honey Brook Harmony Day.
“This would be open to any organizations, businesses and individuals looking to fundraise,” said Heinis. “As long as they are involved in non-profit fundraising... …Bartenders for a Cause is a great (vehicle) for community outreach.”
The fundraising moved from concept to reality quickly, with Eberly and Heinis’ January discussions on the topic soon turning into a plan for a February 6 fundraiser that gained the approval of Bistro on 10 owner Lewis Frame, Jr.
Bistro on 10 hosts Bartenders for a Cause in its Club Room, a first-floor dining area with a bar and dining tables, which has seating for approximately 50 guests.
“The Club Room normally is not open on Wednesdays and we approached (Frame) about the idea and what we wanted it to be and he was completely supportive,” said Eberly. “We are hoping that people will come out and bring their families too because it is a very family friendly environment.”
As the name of the fundraiser suggests, the beneficiary of the fundraising is represented by a special guest bartender. The guest bartender arrives early to prepare for the evening with Eberly and Bar Manager Matt Pfautz, and is supported throughout the evening by Eberly, Pfautz, Chef Mike Schramm, and two servers offering a full menu to guests.
“There are going to be questions (from the guest bartenders) and I am here to make it less stressful,” said Pfautz. “This is something new and fun for the bistro and it lets the community know that there is a greater good to all of this and that we aren’t here for ourselves.”
The Feb. 6 launch of Bartenders for a Cause featured guest bartender Sharon Martin, the owner of New Beginnings Salon in Morgantown, who chose St. Jude’s Research Hospital as her beneficiary. Martin picked St. Jude’s, a pediatric treatment and research facility focused on children’s catastrophic diseases, because of that organization’s involvement in the life of a personal friend.
Eberly and Pfautz also came up with the idea of offering a special thematic drink for each fundraiser. For the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital that drink was a Blue Memphis - Malibu Coconut Rum, Blue Curacao, pineapple juice, and a splash of cream – with the tie-in for the drink being that St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital was founded in Memphis.
Pfautz, who has an excellent rapport with the Chef Schramm, said that the kitchen will come up with special dishes that pair well with the special drink.
As the night of February 6 unfolded, and the Club Room filled with guests, the bistro was soon was abuzz with talk and cheer paired with food and drinks.
Frame made an appearance to greet Martin and check in on his staff. He said that he was pleased with the level of excitement that the staff displayed in preparing for the fundraising, and also complimented Eberly on her inventiveness in coming up with the idea.
“We are happy to make the (process of) giving to simple for those who are here for Sharon and (St. Jude’s),” he said. “This just goes to show how much people care and it is nice to see that so many are willing to give to a good cause.”
By the end of the evening Martin raised over $500 for St. Jude’s.
“I had a room full of friends and it was very fun,” Martin said following the event. “I liked it because it was a good idea and I was thrilled with the turnout that we had.”
Next on schedule for the February 13 Guest Bartenders for a Cause are Nina Frangieh and Melanie Revucky of the Chester County Pet Food Pantry in Coatesville ( located at 2228 Strausburg Road). The pantry – one of the largest pet pantries in the county - not only provides food for homeless pets and needy families with pets, but also helps place pets in need of homes, provide assistance with spaying and neutering animals, and also educate the public on issues related to caring for pets.
“Janet (Heinis) contacted us and asked us if we would like to be involved in (Guest Bartenders for a Cause),” explained Frangieh. “We are beyond grateful for this opportunity and think that it is such a great thing for a business to help out in this way. We help over 500 pets in the community and we are trying to find a new place because our (current location) cannot handle all of the traffic that we get on the days that we are open.”
In addition to hosting the upcoming fundraiser, Bistro on 10 also will have a donation bin for the Chester County Pet Food Pantry set up in the lobby of the adjoined hotel. Donors can drop of needed items including wet and dry cat and dog food, flea and tick medicine, toys, treats, collars, leashes, grooming supplies, cat litter, towels and bedding, now through February 17. The lobby was chosen for the drop off location because it is open 24 hours a day.
Other upcoming guest bartenders include: February 20 - Jonathan Martin of Hunt Hill Farm (charity is TBD); February 27 - Downingtown residents Sam Baez and Michael Doyle will bartend to benefit Doctors without Borders.
Bistro on 10 is currently looking for beneficiaries for the date of March 6, which was booked for the Honey Brook Community Library (postponed until May), and beyond. Those interested in becoming involved in the Guest Bartender at Bistro on 10 should call 610-273-2300 and ask for Lori Eberly.
