Flashback: 1952 Honey Brook Baseball Team Wins ChesCo Championship

The summer of 2012 marks the 60’th anniversary of the 1952 Honey Brook Jr. American Legion Wawasson Post 422 Baseball Team winning the Championship of the Chester County Jr. American Legion Baseball League. The Chester County Jr. American Legion League consisted of teams from Downingtown, Honey Brook, Kennett Square, Parkesburg, Phoenixville, and West Chester made up of players 18 years of age and under. The Honey Brook team was coached by Irwin Bebee who recently moved to Honey Brook from Vineland, NJ. Coach Beebe convinced the Honey Brook American Legion to purchase new uniforms and equipment for the team.
Coach Beebe was a good recruiter and was able to encourage talented players from Honey Brook, Morgantown and Coatesville to play on the team, including Tommy Patton who later played in the Major Leagues for the Baltimore Orioles. Other members of the team were (Honey Brook: Bob Hatton, Don “Duck” Leisey, Tommy Patton, Dan Peffer, Dave Pfahler, Art Ranck, Lester Romig, Larry Terry, and Donald “Denny” Wise. Morgantown: Frankie Fries, Jack Fillman, Kenny Kurtz, Roger McCardle, and Lynn Sagner. Coatesville: Bobby Urbine.)
Coach Bebee put together a group of athletes who were mentally and physically strong, and determined to beat opposing teams. He was a motivator and emphasized team-work, defense, hitting, pitching and speed. The result was a well-rounded ball club that could win a game in many ways.
